A Kiss Before Dying (1956)
Since I can’t stand Robert Wagner and Joanne Woodward, why did I sit through A Kiss Before Dying? It wasn’t only because I was celebrating Mary Astor’s time as Star of the Week; the plot sounded so dramatic and soapy, I couldn’t resist. I’m glad I didn’t, because it was very enjoyable, and just as soapy and dramatic as I’d expected.
Robert and Joanne are college sweethearts, but when she tells him she’s pregnant, he panics. He doesn’t want to marry her, and he doesn’t want to seem like a heel by breaking up with her. What’s a cad to do? Hope for an accident, or plan one himself. When Robert pushed her down the stairs, I knew I was in for a really fun time. And, since I already didn’t like him, I didn’t mind seeing Robert playing such a jerk—he was very convincing.
Round up your girlfriends and rent A Kiss Before Dying during a rainy afternoon, or after one of your friends has been through a bad breakup. It’s a guaranteed win, unless your friend was pregnant and her boyfriend tried to kill her. I love these soapy dramas, like Peyton Place and A Place in the Sun, so if you share my taste, you’ll probably like this movie as well. And if you really like this one, go out and rent the 1991 remake with Matt Dillon!
