An Object of Beauty
by Steve Martin
I read The Pleasure of My Company and fell in love with Steve Martin’s sensitive and careful writing. Naturally, I picked up his next novel An Object of Beauty and eagerly began to read. It seemed unbelievable to me that the same man wrote both books, the styles were so different. While The Pleasure of My Company was compassionate, An Object of Beauty was callous. When The Pleasure of My Company dissected a man’s inner complexes, An Object of Beauty hardly delved into any character’s depth. It was coarse, vulgar, and blunt.
Steve Martin’s writings are extremely diverse, and his talents should be applauded. Also, unless Martin has had a secret career as an art appraiser of which the rest of the world is unaware, he did an incredible amount of research for this novel. The book is set in the art world; auctioneering, appraisal, analyzation, and appreciation for art take the front seat in the writing. The detail and description is incredible. Any art lover will be riveted with the storyline.
I didn’t happen to like this book, but it’s not my intention to discourage anyone else from reading it. If you already have knowledge of fine painting, or are interested in learning more about the art world, read a sample chapter and see if you like it.
