And Then There Were None (1945)
I can’t believe how badly René Clair botched Agatha Christie’s wonderful novel And Then There Were None in the film he directed and produced. This is supposed to be a very creepy, tense thriller, and he tried to turn it into a comedy! Composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco kept repeating the upbeat piano tune “Ten Little Indians” as his only theme throughout the film, and screenwriter Dudley Nichols inserted quips and an overall blasé attitude towards what’s happening on the island. He even wrote in a gag where Richard Hayden gets drunk and staggers around, when that scene is supposed to be very upsetting.
Even if you’re drawn in by the cast—Walter Huston as Dr. Armstrong, Barry Fitzgerald as the judge, Louis Hayward as Lombard, June Duprez, Judith Anderson, and C. Aubrey Smith—you’re not going to like this version. It completely changes Agatha Christie’s message, so if you’re familiar with her story, that’s enough of a clue for you to know what I mean without spoiling surprises for those who aren’t. New folks should check out the original novel or play the one-of-a-kind computer game by The Adventure Company, which has beautiful music, exquisite artwork, and better acting than the film version!
