Author! Author! (1982)
You can probably count on one hand how many times Al Pacino gets to play a good guy, so if you’re like me and prefer him that way, find yourself a copy of Author! Author! and watch it this weekend. It’s my second-favorite of his movies, bested only by Frankie and Johnny, so you know what a high recommendation I’m giving it.
In this genre-less film, Al stars as a playwright who has to deal with difficulties at home and at work. It’s a simple story with many complications, mirroring real life. Al’s wife, Tuesday Weld, leaves him, so he’s left raising their five children while balancing his workload, juggling the demands of theater people, starting a new relationship with Dyan Cannon, and running around New York City. There’s so much to love about this hidden gem, including the accurate portrayal of the Broadway scene. Dyan plays such a typical actress, and Al’s rewrites and dealings with his theater coworkers balance stress, realism, and entertainment. Check out this heartwarming movie the next time you feel there aren’t any good guys left in the world. You might find there is one, or at least there was one back in 1982.
