Beauty Shop (2005)
Is there any end to how adorable and funny Queen Latifah is? I certainly don’t think so, since she’d one of my favorite modern actresses. Even in a silly comedy like Beauty Shop, she adds a layer of depth to her performance that shows she’s a very talented actress.
Queenie stars as a widowed hairdresser in Atlanta, Georgia, and her boss Kevin Bacon is nearly impossible to work for. Finally, when his racial insults become too much to bear, she quits and tries to pursue her old dream of opening her own salon. This hilarious comedy showcases her forté: facing a terrible situation trying to make the best of it. She has limited funds and a ridiculously small loan from the bank, but she finds a hole in the wall salon and fixes it up herself. The hairstylists are difficult to work with, but she maintains professionalism and is far kinder than her previous employer. As a new shop owner, she struggles to build a clientele, and when a snobby potential customer is about to walk out, Queenie says, “I’ll do it for free,” in order to gain her trust. Yes, this movie is a comedy, but it’s also very empowering for any woman who’s found herself at odds with the rest of the world. Throughout the entire movie, no matter how tough life is, Queenie stays true to herself.
Ladies, when you’ve had a no-good day because of love, family, friends, or work, pop in Beauty Shop to feel better. Every minute has at least one laugh-out-loud joke to brighten your day, and the supporting cast is unique, memorable, and hilarious. The operators in Queenie’s salon are the fantastic, sexy Alfre Woodard, the sarcastic Golden Brooks, a perpetually pregnant Sherri Sheppard, Bryce Wilson, the only man in a very feminine world, and Alicia Silverstone in her cutest role since Clueless, with a heavy accent and adorable hairdos. Keshia Knight Pulliam plays Queenie’s wild and directionless niece, and every time I watch the movie, I fall in love with her beauty. Mena Suvari and Kevin Bacon are perfectly delightful as rich villains, and Andie MacDowell is her at sweet, charming best as one of Queenie’s clients who discovers “Fat is good!” Djimon Hounsou is Queenie’s love interest, and a man of many talents. Adele Givens, Paige Hurd, Laura Hayes, L’il JJ, Sheryl Underwood, and Della Reese all bring their own memorable styles to one of the best comedies of the decade.
