Born Yesterday (1950)
In one of the most undeserved Academy Awards of all time, Judy Holliday beat out the incredible performances of Bette Davis, Gloria Swanson, and Eleanor Parker by talking in funny voice and singing while playing cards. If you loved The Farmer’s Daughter and thought Loretta Young deserved her Oscar, you’ll probably love Born Yesterday and won’t find anything wrong with Judy’s win. The rest of you should try to forget Judy won an Oscar for this movie and just treat it as a light romantic comedy from the silver screen. If you do that, as I’ve done with Marty, it’s pretty cute.
Along the same vein as The Farmer’s Daughter, an idiot is given the chance to improve her mind and learn more about politics when introduced to an intelligent and slightly nerdy man. Chock-full of quotable one-liners, this comedy pokes fun at both stupid and smart people, so no matter which side of the fence you sit, there’s something to laugh at. Broderick Crawford is Judy’s tough, coarse boyfriend, a stark contrast to the winy, bespectacled William Holden who’s well-versed in book smarts. While dissimilar, this movie feels like It Happened One Night to me: it’s cute, but why was it ever considered at the Oscars?
