Bottle Shock (2001)
Wine connoisseurs, go out and rent a copy of Bottle Shock. You’ll already know the story, the 1976 competition that made Napa the second wine capital of the world, and you’ll find all the little tidbits in the script about how to make wine and why it tastes the way it does. If you don’t know very much about wine, you’ll be just as entertained, even though it’ll be more informative than amusing.
Alan Rickman stars as the man who came up with the idea of a blind taste-test. He thinks people are blinded by labels and regions, and if they tasted wine without knowing where it came from, they’ll discover new varietals and regions they never thought to explore. Alan travels to Napa and teams up with a father-son team Bill Pullman and Chris Pine who own a winery.
I didn’t end up liking this movie, mainly because I grew up near Napa and have had their success stories and superb wine shoved down my throat ever since I was a child. Since that isn’t everyone’s backstory, you have a good chance at liking this quirky comedy – especially if you don’t even know what the title of the movie means!
