Caught (1949)
In Caught, Barbara Bel Geddes has two handsome men desperately in love with her. Yes, you heard me correctly. And no, it didn’t make sense to me, either, especially since even her insides aren’t likable in the slightest. She starts the movie as a poor girl who wants her roommate to use her influence to jumpstart her modelling career. She resents the recommendation of going to charm school, and when the sleazy Curt Bois tries to pick her up she gets offended. She dreams of becoming a model so she can meet a nice, rich man—what’s wrong with her? She wants to go into the business of putting her body on display, and she doesn’t expect to be ogled and disrespected?
Then, when millionaire Robert Ryan picks her up, she goes along with him until he takes her home. In a panic, she says she wants to leave, but his seemingly callous remark is right on the money: “Come on, you knew you weren’t just going on a drive,” he says. Barbara has an incredibly unlikable character, and since she’s not even remotely beautiful, it’s not realistic that both Robert Ryan and James Mason would fall for her.
Since both Robert and James made a career out of playing bad guys, which one will get the girl? I won’t tell you that, but I will tell you that the love triangle is very true-to-life. Barbara complains that Robert leaves on business too often, but she doesn’t even notice when Doctor James leaves for house calls all the time, he’s doing the same thing! I liked Robert much better in this movie, because his soul was tormented and complicated, and his feelings for Barbara fluctuated just like in real life. You can watch Caught to pick your preference of the two, or you can save yourself a not very good movie and watch The Seventh Veil and Clash by Night instead.
