Christmas in Connecticut (1945)
While this movie is a little silly, the premise is pretty hilarious and still relevant today, which is probably why there was a remake in 1992. A woman famous for her cookbooks is hiding a secret from America: she doesn’t know how to cook! While she always references her family and farm in Connecticut, she actually lives alone in New York. So, when her publisher arranges a good-will publicity campaign for her to have a war hero over to her Connecticut home for Christmas dinner, she’s got to hire a pretend family—and learn how to cook—fast!
With Barbara Stanwyck perfect in a role reminiscent of Woman of the Year, Dennis Morgan as the returning war hero, and Sydney Greenstreet as the unsuspecting publisher, this is a great flick to rent during the holiday season. Yes, it’s a little silly, but at Christmastime, silly movies are allowed, aren’t they? You might not end up owning this one, but it’s entertaining to watch with the family every few years.
