Clash by Night (1952)
Barbara Stanwyck aged gracefully, and amazingly, Hollywood continued to employ her in fantastic leading roles. Those of you who are feminists or feel that Hollywood is continually unfair to women and older actors, I urge you to study her career. She went against the grain, most of the time without getting credit for doing so. She was forty-four years old when Clash by Night was released, and in Old Hollywood, women of that age were playing matronly roles, not playing the sexy lead in a movie that also featured Marilyn Monroe!
Barbara plays a hardened woman with a past who marries a small-town fisherman, Paul Douglas. He’s kind and good and loves her. When she meets his friend, the crude and sexy Robert Ryan, she hates his coarseness. But something else lurks beneath the animosity. . .
I love this movie, so I highly recommend you buy a copy. Seeing it once isn’t enough; you’ll want to watch it over and over again like I do. The three leads give fantastic, heart-wrenching performances, and Alfred Hayes’s script, based on Clifford Odets’s plays, is smart, complex, and timeless. It’s fun to see a young Marilyn Monroe, but she doesn’t have a very big part, so if you’re looking for an early Marilyn dramatic role, rent Don’t Bother to Knock instead. Clash by Night is essential for Barbara Stanwyck fans, or those who like steamy, dramatic love triangles. It’s one of the great classics of the 1950s—rent it with your longtime sweetie pie for a very steamy night!
