Dances With Wolves (1990)
I have a love-hate relationship with the Academy Awards; in 1991, the Academy correctly awarded 7 Oscars to Dances With Wolves. This is a fantastic movie. If you haven’t seen it yet, rent it this weekend.
The film opens during a Civil War battle. If you are impressed by Kevin Costner’s acting and directing during this first scene, you’ll like the movie. While he won the Oscar for Best Director, he unfortunately lost Best Actor that year. Since it’s my intention to praise rather than rant during this review, Jeremy Irons will be spared for the moment.
Costner’s three-hour masterpiece chronicles one man’s relationship with the Native Americans near his outpost after the war. It’s a love letter to American scenery, an homage to the people that land belongs to, and a beautiful representation of Michael Blake’s novel.
Kevin Costner, usually known for charm, All-American good-looks, and sports movies, shows so many hidden talents in this film. Dances With Wolves is a true masterpiece, and unlike other epics with bloody battle scenes like The Last of the Mohicans, this one can be watched over and over again. It’s touching, charming, delicate, and grand. It’s pretty obvious, going into an epic Civil War/Native American movie, that there will be some tragic scenes. But there’s also humor, love, and grace, and the combination of all elements make it a truly classic film, one that will be watched and appreciated for generations to come.
