Dancing Lady (1933)
Dancing Lady is famous for only one reason, and it’s an incredibly important reason. No, it’s not because Joan Crawford sings and dances, and it’s not because she can be seen acting alongside her future husband, Franchot Tone. Dancing Lady introduced movie audiences to one of the most famous and beloved stars of all time: Fred Astaire. Because of that, we will always be grateful to this movie.
If it were George Murphy, Dick Powell, or George Raft instead of Fred Astaire, no one would remember this movie, as it would be typically average of the early 1930s Great Depression musicals—no offense to those gentlemen. Much as Stand Up and Cheer made audiences instantly addicted to Shirley Temple, Dancing Lady had the same effect with Fred and his new audience. There’s never been anyone with as much cuteness, charm, class, and elegance.
If you love Fred, rent this movie. If you don’t, pick another 1930s musical. Watching this one will give you the added treat of seeing a very cute Joan Crawford, before she transitioned into the Mildred Pierce-esque Joan Crawford. The early 1930s was a brief time, and her cutest time, so catch her adorableness while you can.
