Dane: The Realms of the Gods
by Tamora Pierce
I’m very sorry to say that the last of the “Dane books” is now in your hands. Don’t feel too sad; you can always read them over again! I’ve read them so many times; they were a teenage favorite of mine (and my brother’s). Needless to say (but I’m going to say it anyway), if you haven’t read the first three books, do that first before coming to this conclusion.
Dane, everyone’s favorite animal-speaking, -shifting, -healing orphan, grows older. As she nears the beginning of her adult life, she finds she can’t truly move forward without understanding her past. Naturally, a trip to the realm of the gods is in order!
The conclusion of this series has it all: tears, triumphs, love, death, magic, and battle scenes that will keep you on the edge of your seat. While I didn’t end up liking the final path Dane takes, I still enjoyed reading the series. After all, in Tamora Pierce’s earlier series, the Alanna books, I didn’t like the ending and romantic choice either, and they’ll always hold a special place in my heart. Pierce is a wonderful writer whose writing is accessible to young and old readers, including just enough details to inspire teenagers to dream of a world larger than their own.
