Dane: Wolf Speaker
by Tamora Pierce
In this second installment in the “Dane books” of the The Immortals series—that was a hint to read the first book first—Dane explores more of her powers. Under the tutelage of the master magician Numair, she learns how to heal animals, control who she reaches with her mind-speech abilities, and shape-shift.
Yes, it’s become a fad to write and read “shifter” books, but these were the first of their kind back in the 1990s, so keep that in mind. When Dane shifts into a wolf and spends time in a pack, the descriptions transport the readers into her, well, paws. Her senses are heightened, her appetites changed, and her identity muddled. So new to this training; will Dane know how long she can stay a wolf before forgetting her human self? Find out in this thrilling read. When I read this series as a teenager, Wolf Speaker was my worst in the series; I found it incredibly boring. Reading them again as a grown-up, it was actually my favorite of the four! I was able to appreciate the attention to detail and the tension in the action scenes much better.
Finished? Head on over to the bookstore and read Emperor Mage (reviewed here on The Rag).
