Detective Story (1951)
Detective Story is a classic drama, and if you can put yourself back in time, you’ll be in a better position to appreciate the script. In 1951, it was cutting edge stuff to write a gritty police drama where the criminals start screaming and pulling knives in the station, and to talk about dirty cops who abused the system. Nowadays, it’s not that big of a deal.
As you might guess from the title Kirk Douglas is a detective. His boss, Horace McMahon, has received a complaint that Kirk has gotten away with police brutality, but even though Horace comes down hard on him, Kirk has a hard time controlling his temper. Of course he does; it wouldn’t be a Kirk Douglas movie if he didn’t get mad, right? So, while Kirk, Horace, and Detective William Bendix man their stations, Kirk is also on the lookout for a particularly big fish, an abortionist doctor. However, the more he digs into the story, the more he wishes he never did.
So, you can see why this movie was such a big deal in 1951. If you like to say, “Oo, wow! They got that past the censors?” when you watch a movie, you can check this one out, but it just doesn’t have the same feeling now as it did 65 years ago. Eleanor Parker, fresh off her nomination from Caged is given a couple of scenes to show off her acting chops, but she isn’t in the movie long enough to deserve her nomination for Best Actress. She should have been put in the Supporting category, but instead Lee Grant was nominated for hanging around the station acting like an obnoxious idiot, simply because it was her first movie.
