Farewell My Lovely (1975)
In this seventies remake of Murder, My Sweet, Robert Mitchum plays the famed literary private eye Phillip Marlowe. His incredible posture, laid-back narration, and blasé attitude made him great in the role but didn’t do much for his legacy. Those who don’t like him tend to call him a bored, detached actor, but maybe they’ve only seen him in Phillip Marlowe movies. He’s actually an incredibly varied actor with a wonderful range, but if that’s what you’re looking for, don’t rent this one.
Jack O’Halloran hires Bob to find his ex-girlfriend from six years ago, and it isn’t long before Bob finds out her disappearance is linked to more than one mystery. Like most noir movies, there are plots and subplots, and if you’re not paying close attention, things could get confusing. And, since there’s no longer a Hays Code to censor the studios, there’s plenty of violence and sexual content, including a major setting of a brothel and a very violent madam: Kate Murtagh.
These movies aren’t generally up my alley, but I watched it for love of Robert Mitchum. Then again, I don’t usually like most movies that were made in the 1970s, but if you do, you can check out this detective flick.
