Genesis Girl
by Jennifer Bardsley
One of the wonderful things I love about reading is finding out what you like within different genres. For me, it’s a great feeling to cipher through the vast slog of fantasy and science fiction genres and be able to pick out which ones I know I’ll like. Genesis Girl takes place in a futuristic world where rampant technology has gotten out of control—totally up my alley!
The protagonist in the story belongs to a rare class of people who are raised without any technology or outside influences. Their parents send them to an academy and they are secluded behind lead walls so no cell or internet signal can permeate. There, they are cultivated as pure beings, and at the end of their education, they’re auctioned off to advertising companies in search of trustworthy faces to sell their products to a thoroughly polluted public. Doesn’t that sound fascinating?
I loved the interesting ride of Genesis Girl for so many reasons, one of which was the ingenuity of Jennifer Bardsley’s writing. Every twist and turn was unexpected, and since one my faults of the science fiction genre is its predictability, the surprises were greatly appreciated. If you don’t usually like science fiction, this is a great one to start out with.
