Hello, Goodbye (2008)
Fanny Ardent and Gérard Depardieu star as a married couple facing a mid-life crisis in Hello, Goodbye. They’re Jewish, but not practicing, and after a dinner party with more devout friends, they feel like they need to get in touch with their heritage. They take a vacation to Israel, and while Gérard looks at it as an educational trip, Fanny becomes very involved in the culture. She insists she’s found her home and can become who she’s always been meant to be, and she requests they move there permanently.
Gérard proves to be a very good faithful husband in this movie, catering to Fanny’s every whim and standing idly by while she has a flirtation with a rabbi. He agrees to give up their French home and live in a ratty hostel. In France, he was a successful doctor, and in Israel, the only job he can get is working at a car wash. He makes new friends he doesn’t really like, has to deal with a language barrier, and lies to his old friends about his level of happiness. Meanwhile, Fanny flourishes. What do you think will happen to their marriage? You’ll have to watch this very cute comedy to find out. It’s really sweet, and the two leads have a great rapport together. Check it out!
