His Kind of Woman (1951)
I’ll never understand why certain old movies like Bringing Up Baby and It Happened One Night become famous when others in the same genre, like The Palm Beach Story and Midnight that are just as cute or cuter remain obscure. I’m probably the only person in the world—or at least the only person who dares to vocalize it—who doesn’t like Casablanca. I think it’s overrated and boring. If you’re in the mood for a foreign intrigue pseudo-noir romance, why not rent His Kind of Woman instead?
Robert Mitchum and Jane Russell are dynamite together, matching verbal spars and giving as good as they get. Robert Mitchum was paired with dozens of women during his decades-long career, and most of the time he was paired with bland women who weren’t really able to hold their own against him. It worked, though, since he was such a powerhouse actor. Jane Russell is fantastic; her stature and vocal tone make her that much tougher when she stands up to Bob.
I love this movie, not only because the leads are great together, but because the script is delightful. Frank Fenton and Jack Leonard combined mystery, action, romance, and humor all in the exotic setting of Baja. Plus, it’s always fun watching a movie when you know the leads are friends in real life, which Bob and Jane were. Their banter is great, and it’s fun to watch over and over again with a bowl of popcorn in the afternoons.
