This week, Hot Toasty Rag will be honoring the films of Howard Keel! As you know, I don't review television here, but you might want to check out Dallas. He was on the show for ten years! To start with here, I've posted three of his most famous musicals to his page, Annie Get Your Gun, Kiss Me Kate, and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Enjoy!

The 90th Academy Awards is coming up—any fans of the Oscars out there? I used to go all out with parties and sample ballots and prizes and everything, but if you’ve read my movie reviews, you can tell that my attitudes have changed. Nowadays, the fashions earn my respect more than the award choices. So, I might sneak a peek at the red carpet pre-show. Will any of you be watching the main ceremony?
Today I’ve got two Oscar themed books for you: one compiled by Variety Magazine specializing on Oscar fashions, and one listing all the nominees and winners dating back to the first awards ceremony. The latter is actually nicknamed “The Bible” in my household, since it’s referenced every few days as we look up a winner or nominee—or a performance that was snubbed and didn’t make it in the book. Enjoy! Doris Day's time as Star of the Week has come to a close, and all 36 of her reviews are now posted to her page. Here's a clue for next week's star:
Next week’s star costarred with Doris Day in an adorable musical, and he was pretty much the king of musicals in the 1950s. Any guesses? Check back on Monday to see if you're right! Happy Sweethearts Day! In case your plans tonight include watching a movie, here are a few recommendations:
Newlyweds can cuddle up to the romantic comedy Barefoot in the Park. Older folks can try out either Love Among the Ruins or Our Souls at Night. Classic film lovers who don’t mind shedding a tear can put on Roman Holiday. If you’re in a very secure relationship and a little Hollywood drama won’t come between you, you can watch the masterpieces Anna Karenina or Duel in the Sun. For an evening with a lighter tone, you can always rent Valentine’s Day! A good compromise movie is From Here to Eternity; it’s got mushy love in it, but there are also some fight scenes. If you were first friends with your sweetheart, or if you’re thinking of kicking your friendship up to the next level, you can’t miss with the classic The Apartment. If you’re a veteran spouse and today just feels like any other day, watch the hilarious Marriage on the Rocks to spice things up. And ladies, if you’re alone—because only a very devoted sweetie pie will sit through this one with you—splurge on a chick flick and watch Pillow Talk! Hot Toasty Rag's Star of the Week this week is Doris Day! To start things off, we've got three reviews posted to her page that show off her versatility: comedy (Pillow Talk), drama (The Man Who Knew Too Much), and musical (Romance on the High Seas). As you know, I don't review television on The Rag, but if you want to, check out the five-season sitcom The Doris Day Show that she did after her Hollywood career. Enjoy, and come back every day for more reviews! Sometimes, when I do the Stars of the Week, it's not possible for me to get my hands on every movie I want to. I've waited months for movies that say "Very long wait" on my Netflix queue to ship! But in the end, it's worth it, because I get to watch another movie, review it, and add it to the corresponding star's page.
That being said, here are a few vids I finally got around to renting: Gregory Peck - Captain Horatio Hornblower The Guns of Navarone The Scarlet and the Black Katharine Hepburn - The Sea of Grass Stage Door Canteen Jennifer Aniston - Office Christmas Party Ava Gardner - The Sun Also Rises Well, Kirk Douglas's time as Star of the Week has come to a close, and all 45 of his reviews are now posted to his page. Here's a clue for next week's star:
Let’s hear it for all the old-timers! Next week’s star, a costar of Kirk Douglas’s, turns 96 this year! Any guesses? Check back on Wednesday to see if you're right. |
