Our Star of the Week is Heath Ledger! To start things off, we've posted reviews for Brokeback Mountain and The Patriot to his page. And, since he usually stuck to dramas, I picked a funny video clip from 10 Things I Hate About You to lighten the mood. Enjoy! If you'd like to see his television work, check him out in 1996's Sweat and 1997's Roar.

As the theme song goes, it's time to dress up, dress up, dress up in your tuxes and gowns! It's Hot Toasty Rag time!
If you don't know what that means, the Members of the Board here at Hot Toasty Rag have our own awards ceremony that we often contrast against the Academy Awards. I post results online once a year, the morning after the Academy Awards; last year I posted results for the 1940s, and this year I'm proud to post results for the 1950s. Check out the tab at the top for the full list of our awards. Included in each year will be a full list of nominees and winners compared to those honored by the Academy, as well as a video presentation of each ceremony. Enjoy! (And feel free to sing along) Did any of you watch the Academy Awards last night? The Members of the Board of the Hot Toasty Rag Awards had our own ceremony, to announce more nominees and winners of the silver screen era. Last year, I posted the results from the 1940-1949 ceremonies, and I hope you've enjoyed looking over our choices. Come back tomorrow for results of the 1950-1959 ceremonies!

Just in case it isn't fully spring where you are, and you're not quite ready for all the sunshine and flowers, here are some reviews that are a little on the darker side:
In books, there's a decades-long friendship in Firefly Lane, and the classic saga The Man in the Iron Mask. In movies, you can check out Jean Simmons coming home from a mental asylum in Home Before Dark, or Kirk Douglas finding his way after spending years in a concentration camp in The Juggler. Julia Stiles's week has come to an end, and all 19 of her reviews are now posted to her page. Here's your clue for next week's star:
Julia Stiles was in three modern Shakespeare adaptations. Next week’s star was her leading man in one of them. Let me know your guesses in the comments, and come back on Wednesday to find out if you're right. Our Star of the Week is Julia Stiles! Calling all '90s kids, I'm sure you're going to enjoy memory lane. To start with, we've posted the classic "slouch lessons" scene from Save the Last Dance, as well as reviews for Down to You and O (the modern remake of Othello). Enjoy, and come back to her page every day for new reviews. When you're in the right mood for them, a collection of short stories or essays can be a lot of fun. Your brain doesn't have to wrap its mind around too long of a story, and if you don't like one, you can start all over with the next chapter. For a Christmas collection, try out My True Love Gave to Me. A collection of fairy tales re-told is in The Witch. Not the fairy tale type? Single, Carefree, Mellow is quick, cynical and perfect for New Yorkers. And of course, you can always check out On Ice, written by yours truly.
Anyone in the mood for a good laugh? I couldn't stop giggling while reading the hilarious teen book Babe in Boyland. I Take You is definitely more adult, but it's also hilarious.
For those of you who want to watch something funny rather than read, check out James Mason and Susan Hayward in The Marriage-Go-Round. Maggie Smith's time as Star of the Week has come to an end, and all 44 of her review are now posted to her page. Here's your clue for the next star:
She played the same Shakespearean role as Maggie Smith, but in a modern remake. Do you know who she is? Let me know your guesses in the comments, and come back on Friday to start her week. |
