Since I just finished reviewing one version of Mildred Pierce and will be reviewing the other in the next couple of days, I thought this would be a good time to review the original novel.
I rented a three-volume collection of James M. Cain stories from my college library. I had a long weekend, and just in case I finished one book, I wanted another ready for me so I wouldn’t have to take the bus back to school mid-Saturday. (My apartment didn’t have WiFi, as crazy as it sounds.) Before class on Monday, I’d read all three books and headed back to the library for a fresh batch of novels for the week. James M. Cain is hard to put down! For steamy romance lovers who like a hint of murder in their stories, check out Double Indemnity and The Postman Always Rings Twice. Too tired for all that excitement? Mildred Pierce is the one for you. If you identify with the Mama Rose character in the musical Gypsy, an overworked, sacrificing mother who gets nothing in return, you’ll love this one.
