If you're trying to find a festive flick to watch this evening, check out our list of suggestions here!
Our final Star of the Week for 2023 is Edmund Gwenn! To start things off, you can watch a video clip from Miracle on 34th Street and read reviews of Louisa and Mister 880. Come back every day for new reviews posted directly to his page! As fall is about to turn into winter, I thought I'd sneak in a few more thrillers. Weather has a lot to do with what we like to watch and read, doesn't it? Holiday cheer is just around the corner, and the days are numbered when we like to enjoy being scared by creepy characters. Check out these new book reviews:

Did you discover any new movies this year?
And here we are at last, our final Star of 2023, our Christmas Star: This costar of Burt Lancaster was legally proved to be "the one and only Santa Claus", so no holiday would be complete without watching his iconic Christmas movie. Come back on Saturday to start his week! Happy Halloween everyone! New this year are Shadow of a Doubt with Joseph Cotten, Gaslight with Ingrid Bergman, Ghost Story with Fred Astaire, and more!
A hot and toasty toast to Burt Lancaster, our new Star of the Week! Ladies, there will be lots of drool-worthy movies for you to take note of as the days pass and new reviews are posted directly to his page. For today, start by watching the "Water, I recommend it!" scene from The Rainmaker, and read reviews of two of his finest performances, Birdman of Alcatraz and The Swimmer. Enjoy - I know I will! My friend introduced me to the fantastic Caraval series by Stephanie Garber. Not only did she gift me all three novels, but she gave me her own personal copy of the first one! Have you read these books? They’re the best fantasy books ever! Sometimes I get bogged down with imaginary worlds, but the world Garber created is so interesting, so incredible, and so engrossing, I would go visit in a heartbeat. I just love the world and characters she created, so if you haven’t devoured the Caraval books yet, go get yourself the whole set and get cracking!
#1: Caraval #2: Legendary #3: Finale Whit Bissell's week has come to an end, and all 56 of his reviews are now posted to his page. Are you ready for your clue to guess next week's star?
Next week’s star was actually a request by one of Hot Toasty Rag’s fans! A frequent costar of Whit Bissell, he’s a magnetic leading man who played conmen, prisoners, and western heroes. Leave your guesses below and come back on Monday to start honoring him! Whit Bissell is our new Star of the Week! For fun, watch a clip from I Was a Teenage Frankenstein posted to his page. You can also read reviews of No Name on the Bullet and Brute Force, movies which feature him pretty prominently. Come back every day for new reviews, and enjoy getting to know this character actor! Greta Garbo was honored as Star of the Week quite a while ago, but it's understandable that the review of her biography 'Garbo' is only just being posted today - it's almost 700 pages! Although I didn't end up enjoying the book, I appreciate the labor of love that went into it. If she's one of your favorite actresses, check it out!
Jeff Corey's time on Hot Toasty Rag has come to a close, and all 43 of his reviews are now posted to his page. I hope you enjoyed discovering someone new. Ready for your next clue?
Next week’s star is another recognizable character actor; those of you who like old horror movies might think of him as a mad scientist. Both he and Jeff Corey had pretty prominent parts in a tense Burt Lancaster prison break movie. Any guesses? If you're ready to throw something at me, I understand. But it's important to honor the little guys as well as the super-famous. See you Sunday! Old movie buffs might know the face, but now you all will know the name. Jeff Corey is our new Star of the Week! To start things off, you can read reviews for Third Finger Left Hand and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. You can also watch a video clip of him playing Wild Bill Hickock in Little Big Man. Enjoy, and come back to his page every day. As the summer winds down, if you're looking to hold onto the sun for a little longer, here are three new book reviews with sunshine settings:
The Summer Island Swap: She thought she was getting a spa vacation, and instead it's a save-the-planet volunteer program! Seabreeze Inn: The first in series about a Californian beach B&B And finally, The Flight of the Phoenix: a plane crashes and leaves the passengers stranded in an Arabian desert. Talk about summer heat! Myrna Loy's week has come to a close, and all 55 of her reviews are now posted to her page. It'll be nearly impossible to guess next week's star, since he was an obscure character actor. Nevertheless, for those of you who have seen hundreds of old movies, here is your clue:
Best known for being the bad guy in John Wayne's eye patch movie, you can also find him chasing Butch and Sundance, or playing a Swedish honeymooner in a Myrna Loy movie. Go ahead and throw something at me, but I think it's important to honor the little guys as well as the big stars. Come back on Saturday to discover a new actor! Myrna Loy is our new Star of the Week! Although she was never nominated for an Academy Award, she won a Rag and was nominated three more times. You can watch a video clip from Third Finger, Left Hand, and read reviews of two underrated performances: From the Terrace and Wings in the Dark. Come back to her page for new reviews every day and have fun! The hot weather might not be hot enough for some; in case you're looking to add some steam to your summer, check out the oldie but goodie novel 'The Carpetbaggers'. It's naughty, it's dated, but if you like melodramas and escapism, it's right up there with 'Peyton Place'. Check out my full review here.
Teresa Wright's week has come to an end, and it's now time for your next clue. All 22 of her reviews are now posted to her page, if you want to review anything. Here's your clue:
Next week’s star won a Rag award for playing Teresa Wright’s mother, in one of the most famous movies about veterans. If you know old movies, you know who she is. Check back on Friday to start her week! Teresa Wright is our new Star of the Week! To start things off, you can watch a video clip from her screen debut in The Little Foxes. You can also read reviews for two of my favorites, Enchantment and The Imperfect Lady, and new reviews will be posted to her page daily. Enjoy! Summer is definitely underway, so girls, head on over to the beach with a full tote of sunscreen, towels, and beach reads. I plowed through both of these resort-themed novels. Check them out!
Beach Trip - four college friends reunite on a vacation The Beach Club - Elin Hilderbrand's first book! Joseph Cotten's time as Star of the Week has come to a close, but if you missed any of his reviews, all 36 are now posted to his page. Are you ready for your next clue?
This costar named the film she made with Joseph Cotten as her favorite. Do you know who she is? Check back on Saturday to find out. In case there's a lull in the fireworks tonight, you might want to pop in a patriotic movie. Check out our full list of wartime or Americana flicks here! New this year are Hers to Hold, The Alamo, Tora! Tora! Tora!, and others.
Joseph Cotten is our new Star of the Week! To start things off, you can watch a video clip from Shadow of a Doubt and read reviews of two of my favorite of his movies: I'll Be Seeing You and The Steel Trap. Come back directly to his page every day for new reviews, and enjoy! For his television work, try and find two seasons of The Joseph Cotten Show. |
