Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964)
The title song of “Hush. . . Hush, Sweet Charlotte” was a big hit in 1964, and the film itself is one of the more famous horror movies to come out of the sixties, but anyone who watches it will probably readily admit it’s not good. A huge cast, Bette Davis, Olivia de Havilland, Agnes Moorehead, Joseph Cotten, Cecil Kellaway, and Mary Astor in her final film, joined together, but I couldn’t even finish this movie. It was too heartbreaking to see Bette Davis reduced to loud screeching and over-over-acting.
In the 1920s, a large party is held at Victor Buono’s mansion. He’s upset because his daughter, Bette Davis, is having an affair with the married Bruce Dern. Then, after Bruce is forced to break up with Bette, an unshown assailant kills Bruce with a meat cleaver. Bette is found in a blood-soaked dress. The film advances decades later, and Bette lives alone in her childhood home. Her ornery maid Agnes, her cousin Olivia, her friend Joe, and Bruce’s widow Mary all have hidden agendas as they very slowly piece together what happened all those years ago and tell it to a rather bored audience. This movie is two hours and fifteen minutes long. Do you think you could sit through all of it?
Kiddy Warning: Obviously, you have control over your own children. However, due to gory violence, I wouldn’t let my kids watch it.
