Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959)
Since I always get Journey to the Center of the Earth confused with The Time Machine, my mom has had to show me the movie several times. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, since this 1959 classic stars the incredibly handsome James Mason. He starts off the movie dressed in beautiful clothes, and as the film progresses, he gets sweaty and disheveled; maybe I’ve watched it several times just to make up my mind what part of the movie he looks best!
In case any of you actually care about the plot, instead of handsome men, here it is: James Mason and a perpetually shirtless Pat Boone go on an expedition, to hike their way to the center of the Earth. With bad guys on their trail, and three unexpected guests—will they make it?
I’m not really a science fiction fan, in the classic sense, so if someone I didn’t like was the star of this movie, like Spencer Tracy or Gary Cooper, I probably wouldn’t have sat through it more than once. James has such energy and passion, and he really makes the most of this rare role where he doesn’t play the villain. Wouldn’t you agree to an impossible, absurd-sounding trek if James Mason tried to talk you into it? I’d agree to anything as long as he talked long enough.
The set designs and special effects are mostly still interesting to watch, even though it’s been almost sixty years. And, even though sometimes the characters make really silly blunders, for the most part the story is pretty riveting. I think I like this one better than The Time Machine, although I might need to watch it one more time to make sure.
