Keep Moving: And Other Tips and Truths About Aging
by Dick Van Dyke
Don't even bother reading my review; get out there and buy a copy of Dick Van Dyke's memoir right now! Okay, you can read my review if you want to.
This is by far one of the best memoirs--and book of any genre--I've ever read. If you're not a fan of his before you read his adorable, insightful, and heartfelt prose, you will be after the first chapter. And if you're not by the end of the book, go search for your heart.
It's no wonder why Dick Van Dyke is in his '90s. He has an incredibly inspiring outlook on life. He appreciates the little things, understands the importance of laughter, and is always open to learning. He learned an incredible lesson through falling in love with his wife Arlene, and he takes his readers through his realization: Love comes at unexpected times, through unexpected people, and pays no attention to conventional wisdom. Tenderly, he describes his love story and shares scenes from their courtship and marriage. It's one of the most inspiring romances I've ever read, even in the grandest of fictions, and I shed countless tears throughout the book. Everyone should be so lucky to feel such love and experience a marriage as caring as the Van Dykes.
The beautiful love story aside, there are other darling life wisdoms included in the book, ones that will make you laugh, cry, and think long and hard about the way you're living. Although this is technically a memoir, I'd be tempted to transfer it to the "self-help" category. If everyone read his book, and made improvements to their daily routines based on his examples, the world would be filled with infinitely happier people.
Thank you, Mr. Van Dyke, for sharing so much of yourself with your readers. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.
