Little Children (2006)
If you watch the preview for Little Children, it’ll impress you as being a creation from the director of In the Bedroom and starring three top-tier actors, Kate Winslet, Jennifer Connelly, and Patrick Wilson. It’ll look like a tense, romantic thriller about infidelity. It will not look like one of the most upsetting movies you’ll watch in the decade.
Yes, Patrick Wilson and Jennifer Connelly are married, and as their young son becomes friends with Kate Winslet’s daughter, infidelity enters their home. The trailer didn’t lie. It merely left out an extremely large part of the story, for the simple reason that it wasn’t appropriate to show “general audiences” of a preview. Jackie Earle Haley plays a convicted child molester, harassed in town and living a dysfunctional life upon his release. Almost everyone in this movie has a sexual perversion, but the scenes that discuss pedophilia are quite upsetting.
I understand that sometimes art is heavy and dramatic, but I don’t prefer it to be upsetting. This movie is not just a tense thriller with a bunch of sex scenes. The upsetting content is so overwhelming, you might forget there even were sex scenes earlier in the movie. While this movie isn’t particularly similar to Closer, I also found that film to be needlessly sexual and pointless. If you agree, don’t rent Little Children. If you enjoyed watching Closer, this one probably won’t bother you either.
Kiddy Warning: Obviously, you have control over your own children. However, due to sex scenes, very adult content, and upsetting scenes involving children, I wouldn’t let my kids watch it.
