Michael Collins (1996)
In this biopic of the Irish Republican leader Michael Collins, written and directed by Neil Jordan, audiences are treated to a host of Irish actors, British actors putting on Irish accents, and Julia Roberts pretending to be Irish. Coming from the creator of The Crying Game, you can expect a bit of violence, and while it’s not the most gory or violent movie I’ve ever seen, it does have quite a lot of blood.
Liam Neeson stars as the famous revolutionary, with Aidan Quinn as his close friend. Alan Rickman is the elected leader, and while his ideas sometimes conflict with Liam’s, they’re on the same side so they usually bury their differences. Julia Roberts is Aidan Quinn’s girlfriend, but when he leaves briefly on business, she and Liam start to bond. When he asks her to promise she’ll never care about him, that’s the cue for the audience to know things might not end well. Granted, the romance and friendships aren’t the main parts of the story, but if your favorite movies don’t involve the IRA and tons of gang violence, you might want to know the side plot points. I don’t usually like these types of movies, and I was watching it for the cast.
Kiddy Warning: Obviously, you have control over your own children. However, due to violence, I wouldn’t let my kids watch it.
