Midway (1976)
It’s so obvious Midway was trying to be another The Longest Day. And it’s just as obvious that it failed, miserably. I’m very appreciative of a good war movie, when it’s good, but when it’s boring, badly acted, and doesn’t pay attention to the time period, I’m very critical. First of all, no one in the entire movie except for Robert Mitchum—and he only has a five-minute part—is wearing a 1940s haircut! It’s not difficult to recreate, especially since many of the leads were actually around during that time and remembered how they used to wear their hair!
Just as in The Longest Day, it chronicles the planning and execution of one particular battle from WWII, and it labels the locations, timestamps, and ranks of each characters. However, there are no subtitles in this movie, and it just doesn’t feel the same when every Japanese character speaks English as it did when the German actors spoke German in 1962’s epic. Tons of stars join the cast list of this movie—Henry Fonda, Charlton Heston, Glenn Ford, Robert Mitchum, James Shigeta, Edward Albert, Robert Wagner, Hal Holbrook, Toshiro Mifune, John Fujioka, Charles Coburn, Cliff Robertson, Dabney Coleman, Tom Selleck, and Pat Morita—but it’s still not very entertaining. I hardly think 1970s camera zooms belong in a WWII epic. Do yourself a favor and skip this one, even if you like the cast.
