My Afternoons with Margueritte/La tête en friche (2010)
My Afternoons with Margueritte is such a sweet movie. My mom, who’s a very hard sell when it comes to subtitled movies, and my brother, who’s a very hard sell when it comes to cute movies, both loved it! Of course I loved it, since Gérard Depardieu is one of my favorites, and the storyline is truly adorable.
Gérard stars as an illiterate man who gets by in his little world. He has a girlfriend, a job, a roof over his head, and friends. In his circle of friends, he’s the one they like to make fun of, so when he starts to better his life, they’re not happy for him. True to life, isn’t it? How does he improve himself? By spending his afternoons with Gisèle Casadesus, a 95-year-old lady who likes to read poetry in the park. She not only opens his eyes to the written word, but to lovely language and hidden beauty in life. They have such a sweet and inspiring friendship, and given their age difference, there’s nothing romantic between them. It’s so refreshing for two people to care about each other and not have any ulterior motive, and these two different characters brighten each other’s lives in unexpected ways. They bring out the best in each other, and it’s exactly what the need in their stages in life. Gisèle is nearing the end of her life and appreciates leaving behind memories with someone who will appreciate her. Gérard has been belittled his whole life, and meeting someone who is sensitive enough to help him learn without making him ashamed gives him a new lease on life.
If you liked Stanley & Iris, check this one out—even though this one’s not a romance. It’s really touching.
