My Life So Far
by Jane Fonda
Whether you love Jane Fonda for her darling films of the 1960s, her daring roles in the 1970s, her fitness regimes, her social and political positions, or her iconic style, you’ll probably be interested in reading her 2005 memoir My Life So Far. She took a fifteen-year break from Hollywood, returning the same year with the comedic hit Monster-in-Law, and now that it’s been ten years and she’s still generating headline buzz, it’s clear her title is very fitting. I’m sure if she wanted to, she could do what Lauren Bacall did and add a large addendum to her memoir, since she’s still a household name and very active.
While this book isn't my favorite celebrity memoir (I read David Niven's book each and every year), it’s extremely interesting and informative to read. Jane doesn’t shy away from the upsetting parts of her life, but she also shares some wonderful moments. Sometimes, when you love a movie star, you might try to stay away from learning too much about his or her personal life. What’s the likelihood that someone so beloved will live up to the hype? Not very. Sometimes celebrities turn out to be different than we imagine them to be, and then we don’t like them anymore. For example, if you absolutely love Henry Fonda and don’t want to read anything bad about him, you’re not going to want to read his daughter’s memoir (or, for that matter, Elsa Lanchester's). If you’ve never seen an interview with Jane Fonda and you don’t know her personal or political views, you might not like her book. If you’ve seen interviews and know a little about her, and you still love her, then grab a copy of this book because you’ll probably love it!
