Our Town (1940)
Our Town, like a lot of “profound” plays, is a like-it-or-lump-it affair. I can’t stand it, and every time I see it, live or on the screen, I still can’t stand it.
In this tribute to Americana, an archetypical family shows the audience the tragedies of love and life. The play makes everyone mime their surroundings and props, but the film thankfully has scenery and actual objects for the actors to interact with. I hate that particular miming style, so that is the one nice aspect of the movie. William Holden, Martha Scott, Fay Bainter, Thomas Mitchell, Beulah Bondi, Stuart Erwin, and Guy Kibbee make up the cast, so if that group interests you, and you don’t mind a depressing, supposedly deep siege, you can rent it. I’ve had to sit through it twice, and that was two times too many.
