Our Vines Have Tender Grapes (1945)
My mom warned me that if I watched Our Vines Have Tender Grapes, I’d need to book an appointment with my dentist because I was sure to grow a cavity. Unfortunately, I didn’t even need to call my dentist. Not only was this movie terrible, but I didn’t even get a pain in my tooth.
On a Norwegian-American farm in Wisconsin, Edward G. Robinson and Agnes Moorehead are parents to Margaret O’Brien. Margaret is best friends with Butch Jenkins, and for most of the movie, they argue and don’t really get along but continue to play together. Since everyone is so happy all the time, it feels like the movie is building up to a gigantic disaster, but nothing really happens. Overall, this precursor to Hallmark movies is incredibly boring and disappointing. Eddy G and Agnes, who have donned accents in other films, used their regular voices. Margaret and Butch have no loving bond between them, so the audience isn’t left with any warm feeling that they continue to play through thick and thin. Margaret’s talent isn’t showcased, and Butch’s lack of talent is continually exploited. Do yourself a favor and watch anything else this weekend.
