Perfect Pairs
by Hulton Getty
Of all the famous screen pairing to put on the cover, Hulton Getty chose David Niven’s embrace of Barbara Stanwyck in The Other Love, an overlooked movie most people haven’t even seen. I think the cover design was a great choice, for two reasons. One, in choosing a less-than-famous screen pairing, Getty is setting the tone for the rest of the book. Sure, Gone With the Wind and Casablanca are included, but most of the book contains onscreen couples from less famous, and some obscure movies. Buster Keaton is not normally thought of as a romantic figure, but he’s included alongside the more idyllic Cary Grant and Rock Hudson.
Alongside each photograph is a quote about love and a trivia about the corresponding movie. Next to Buster Keaton’s picture from Sidewalks of New York, the quote is, “Women like silent men. They think they’re listening,” from Marcel Archard. An unknown fact about High Noon? Gary Cooper’s pained, conflicted expressions owed their origin to his constant pain from ulcers and an injured hip. Poor guy, but he did win an Oscar for the role.
For those who love old movies and old movie romances as much as I do, this pocketbook is a must. Oh, and the second reason the cover is perfect? Because David Niven is a total stud. Enough said.
