Road to Bali (1952)
Obviously, if you’re not into the Road pictures, you’re not going to like Road to Bali. I love them, and as the third volume I’ve seen, it didn’t disappoint. Bing Crosby and Bob Hope play their usual characters, conmen thrust into an exotic location who fall in love with Dorothy Lamour and find their lives in great danger. No one watches these movies for the plot; they watch it for the hilarious banter between Bob and Bing, the cute songs, and the endless gags and one-liners that have you laughing no matter how terrible a mood you think you’re in.
As usual, they break the fourth wall and crack jokes with the audience—Bob warns people that Bing is about to sing so they should head for the popcorn stand—and their endless inside jokes make you feel like you’re part of their club. Jane Russell, Carolyn Jones, Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, and Humphrey Bogart—through archive footage—all make cameos in this hilarious flick. At one point, Bob Crosby walks on the screen, aims his rifle and shoots in the air. Bing says, “That was my brother, Bob. I promised him a shot in our next picture.” When they see Humphrey Bogart in the jungle, they think for a moment it’s a mirage because they’re lost and delirious. Then they find his Oscar, which Bob quickly snatches from his partner. “Give me that; you’ve already got one!”
One thing: the duo doesn’t sing the classic song “Road to Bali” in the film, but they recorded a single out of it, so you can easily find and listen to it. If you’re as much in love with the Road pictures as I am, go rent this one and bring some Kleenexes to wipe away your tears of laughter.
