Road to Morocco (1942)
“We’ve got to rescue the girls! Let’s storm the place!”
“You storm. I’ll stay here and drizzle.”
Such is the adorable banter of Bing Crosby and Bob Hope in Road to Morocco, the third in their famous Road pictures. This is only the second one I’ve seen, and I thought it was hilarious. In the beginning of the movie, there’s a rather offensive bit about retarded people, but once those few minutes are up, it’s a nonstop joke fest for the two friends.
Prompted by a literal road sign in the middle of the desert, Bob and Bing sing the famous song and ride a camel into Morocco, where they soon fall in love with the same princess, Dorothy Lamour. She’s already engaged to the sheik, played by Anthony Quinn, though, so it might be a little difficult for one or both of them to ride off into the sunset with her.
Road to Morocco is really cute, and if you’re in the mood for something light and fluffy, or if you like the old Laurel & Hardy movies, you won’t go wrong by renting one of these flicks. I happen to love tongue-in-cheek humor that runs rampant in these movies, where the characters either look in the camera or deliver a line that makes it obvious they know they’re actors in a movie. For some, those jokes take them out of the magic, but I think it’s hilarious. Just an example: Bob recaps everything that’s gone wrong in their journey so far, and when Bing says he knows everything that’s happened, he quips, “Yeah, but the people who came in halfway through the picture don’t!” Then, for an extra laugh, Bing asks, “You mean they missed my song?”
If you like Whoopie cushion gags, fast-paced puns, talking camels, and jokes about Bob Hope’s elusive search for an Oscar, you’ll love this installment of the Road movies. Plus, you’ll get to hear the famous songs “Road to Morocco” and “Moonlight Becomes You”, during which Bob and Bing share a smooch when they both reach for the girl and miss!
