Seven Chances (1925)
In Seven Chances, Buster Keaton stands to inherit seven million dollars, but only if he gets married by the time he’s twenty-seven. And since his birthday is that very day, and he has a seven p.m. deadline, he’d better walk fast! He may be in love with Ruth Dwyer, but she’s not impressed with the romanticism of his sudden proposal, so he’s left no other choice but to propose to any number of other women.
Does this movie sound familiar? It’s the original to The Bachelor, starring Chris O’Donnell and Renée Zellweger. It’s a great story, which withstood a very faithful remake seventy years later, and has some cute and funny scenes. After all, there’s only two movies you can rent to watch a man get chased down the street by hundreds of brides: The Bachelor and Seven Chances. If you’ve seen one, you need to see the other.
