Son of Fury (1942)
It’s no wonder Tyrone Power was the swashbuckling hero of the 1940s, with movies like The Mark of Zorro, The Black Swan and Son of Fury kicking off the decade. This movie is very entertaining and exciting, with romance, revenge, and family honor at its forefront.
As a child, played by Roddy McDowell, a young boy with an illegitimate name is taken from his grandfather’s care and raised under his uncle’s watchful eye so he will never forget his lack of status. He’s made a stable boy and treated terribly. When he grows up and becomes Tyrone Power, he breaks away from the abuse and vows to find his fortune and seek revenge.
While some of you out there will think Alfred Newman’s music is the best part of this movie, I’ve seen thousands of old movies and recognized his theme as a merge of his own The Hurricane and Erich Korngold’s Captain Blood. It’s very pretty and fitting, though. My favorite part of the film was the casting. Sometimes, when the cast is right, nothing bad can happen to the movie. Ty is a wonderful swashbuckling hero, George Sanders always plays a convincing evil snob, Frances Farmer plays a beautiful lady swayed by her hormones, and Gene Tierney is sweet and loving, the total opposite of her later typecast. Harry Davenport, one of the silver screen’s most beloved character actors, is given a couple of tearjerker scenes as Ty’s grandfather, and it’s really sweet to see him in a meaty role. You can even find Halliwell Hobbs, one of the most recognizable butlers, as a servant in the stables! I particularly love Gene in this film. She’d only started making movies in 1941, and her parts up until Son of Fury were very small. In this breakthrough role, she’s a native islander. She speaks broken English, hula dances, and prances around in a sarong with long, flowing hair. It’s no wonder she rocketed to stardom!
Check this adventure flick out if you liked Captain Blood, as it’s enormously similar. It’s a classic story with a wonderful cast and great music.
