Sorry, Wrong Number (1948)
If you’ve ever taken a high school drama class, you’re probably familiar with Lucille Fletcher’s radio play Sorry, Wrong Number. For the rest of you, here’s a brief description of the plot: A bedridden woman overhears two men over the telephone plotting a murder. She tries to contact and help the police before it’s too late, but it’s rather difficult since she’s confined to her bedroom.
Barbara Stanwyck stars as the woman with a surprising amount of screaming and screeching stored up in her, despite her illness. She’s married to the new star Burt Lancaster, and when Burt leaves her all alone, she hears the dreaded phone call. Through Anatole Litvak’s artful direction that not only helps the story along but gives the audience a feel for each character by showing the details of his or her surroundings in each introduction shot, you’ll find yourself at the edge of your seat even if you know what’s going to happen. If you don’t know what’s going to happen, the plot really is suspenseful, so those of you who like thrillers or film noir will want to check this out. Just make sure you’re prepared to watch an old movie—it’s very stylized.
