Sudden Fear (1952)
In Sudden Fear, Joan Crawford stars as a very stupid woman. Sometimes it’s fun to watch a stupid making all the wrong choices in a movie, so if you’re in that kind of a mood tonight, you can pop in this soapy 1950s drama that introduced Jack Palance in his first leading role and rewarded him with an Oscar nomination. He was up for Supporting Actor, but I don’t know why, since he’s in almost every scene and very clearly the male lead.
Joan is a successful, middle-aged playwright, and Jack is a young aspiring actor. During a rehearsal of her latest play, Joan insults Jack’s talent and insists he be replaced before the show’s open. It’s a humiliating experience, and he doesn’t forget it. When they run into each other on a train a month later, he pretends that he holds no hard feelings. After a whirlwind romance, they get married! It’s incredibly clear to the audience that Jack is lying, but Joan is an idiot. She thinks a young, handsome, sexy actor whom she previously humiliated has really fallen in love with her and worships her morning, noon, and night. Speaking of frequent worshipping, there are quite a few nasty scenes in this film that miraculously made it past the censors. In one scene, an unmarried couple are shown lying down together, and in another, Joan’s clearly topless beneath her sheets. Joan’s morning grins give Scarlett O’Hara a run for her money, and Jack rasps the line, “I’m so crazy about you, I could break your bones.” There’s enough steam in this movie to fog up your bathroom, so if you’re looking for a great spooky date night movie, this is it. You might not want to watch it if you’re significantly older than your sweetie pie, though.
