Summer Holiday (1948)
This movie is so adorable! I’d never heard of it before, and when I rented it for Walter Huston’s week on Hot Toasty Rag, I saw the cast list and chalked it up to a silly Mickey Rooney musical. While he does mug his way through it, it’s actually very cute that he was cast as the older son, since in the non-musical version Ah, Wilderness! in 1935, he played the younger son! The stories are incredibly similar, except that this one has darling, catchy tunes and is in Technicolor. If you liked one, check the other out!
Summer Holiday is a slice of life in Americana, during the turn of the century when men wore driving goggles and women didn’t grant kisses before they were engaged. Quaint traditions that aren’t still practiced are mingled in with wisdoms that prove the times haven’t changed much. At the head of the family, Walter Huston is handsome and charming and tries to manage everyone’s quirks and complaints. His wife, Selena Royle, disapproves of Mickey Rooney’s wild ideas, but Walter knows the better way to handle him is to treat him with understanding instead of judgment. Walter’s brother Frank Morgan is an alcoholic who can’t keep a job, even though Agnes Moorhead won’t marry him until he gets his act together. They have some darling scenes together, as do he and Walter, as they communicate a brotherly bond across the screen. Mickey is frustrated by both capitalism and his girlfriend, Gloria DeHaven, and acts out in ways only teenage boys know how to.
If you like shmaltzy, feel-good old movies, like Meet Me in St. Louis, you have to rent Summer Holiday. There are some serious themes within the plot, but it manages to glorify the golden age and make you feel everything will turn out all right by the time the credits roll.
