That Forsyte Woman (1949)
The old adage of giving everyone a second chance is certainly true when it comes to movie stars. I couldn’t stand Greer Garson in Goodbye, Mr. Chips or Random Harvest, but in That Forsyte Woman, she was perfect. I’d seen the detailed 2002 miniseries and fell in love with it, but the one criticism with that version was the Gina McKee’s portrayal of Irene. Greer Garson was so perfect as Irene, it’s as if it was written for her. Greer was everything Irene needed to be: beautiful, sophisticated, aloof, and with a hint of passion in the areas that interest her. Her energy was contagious, and it was easy to see why Walter Pidgeon couldn’t get her out of his mind.
Both Walter Pidgeon and Errol Flynn fall in love with Greer Garson in That Forsyte Woman. If you’ve never read the book or seen the miniseries, you won’t get a lot of the backstory, but the movie gives you a Cliffs Notes version so that you know a little about the feuding families. An interesting trivia about the casting of this film is that Walter and Errol’s parts were originally reversed. They decided to switch to challenge themselves to go against type, and the end result was Errol as the reserved, cold character and Walter as the romantic suitor. It doesn’t make sense on paper, but give them a shot and get ready to be surprised about their acting ranges!
With breathtakingly beautiful costumes by Walter Plunkett, a fitting lively theme by Bronislau Kaper, and an engaging story, this is a movie to add to your list. Even if you think you don’t like Greer Garson, or even if you can’t imagine Errol Flynn as reserved, get ready to have your mind blown.
