The Bells of St. Mary's (1945)
In this sequel to Going My Way, Bing Crosby reprises his famous, Oscar-winning role as Father O’Malley. He was nominated for another Oscar for this movie, making history as the first person to be nominated for the same role twice. This movie is so similar to its predecessor, people get them confused, much like Holiday Inn and White Christmas. It even features a silly song that was up for an Oscar that could be sung at the same time as the song from the original! Match the movies to the songs: “Aren’t You Glad You’re You” or “Swingin’ on a Star”. Do you know which one was from The Bells of St. Mary’s? That’s okay, neither does anyone else.
Ingrid Bergman dons a habit and costars as the stern nun who disapproves with Bing’s methods at the new parish. But anything for the children, so they just might team up for the greater good. Thrown in is one more disapproving grouch, in the form of businessman Henry Travers. But does anyone out there really thing Clarence the Angel can play a bad guy? Do you think he might thaw in for the sake of Christmas, children, or God?
You can rent this one if you want to see Ingrid in an Oscar-nominated role, but since she was nominated so many more other times, you can also skip this one and pick something else. Unless Going My Way is your favorite movie and you like the idea of watching a sequel that feels like a remake, you’ll probably wonder as to the point of this one.
