The Cat Who Could Read Backwards
by Lilian Jackson Braun
This is the first book in the The Cat Who... series that I've read. Unfortunately, it will most likely be the last. The stars of this series is a journalist with a funny name who is obsessed with his mustache, and a highly intelligent Siamese cat with a sensitive palate. It sounded like my next favorite book, but as I am not a murder mystery fan, I found myself getting bored/lost/falling asleep several times throughout my read.
For those who enjoy the "cozy mystery" genre, this might be highly enjoyable. The protagonist reminded me of J.K. Rowling's mangy Cormoran Strike in The Cuckoo's Calling, another murder mystery that proved to be amazingly simultaneously confusing and predictable. If you liked Mr. Strike, or if the idea of an entire mystery series being solved by a cat, you might want to give it a try.
For those of you who are like myself, relying solely on the cat and the mustache to save the story, try another book. I found the cat far from endearing, and while I like mustache jokes as much as the next person, I didn't feel very "cozy" after finishing the mystery.
