The Closet/Le placard (2001)
This hilarious French comedy is unfortunately dated and can’t really be enjoyed by modern audiences anymore. The entire premise would have people cringing and getting ready to protest with angry signs. However, in 2001, it was very funny, so if you want to check it out, put on your 2001 goggles.
Daniel Auteuil has enemies at work, and fearing he’ll soon be fired, he takes a friend’s advice. They send anonymous, false photos of Daniel in sexual situations with other men, and the bosses realize that, while they had every intention of firing him, now they can’t because he’s a homosexual. All of a sudden, people who hated him at work are nice to him, afraid that he’ll sue or get them fired for homophobia. Gérard Depardieu plays a macho bully, and since we all know he’s a softie at heart, you can guess he doesn’t end the movie exactly as he started. Michèle Laroque is Daniel’s coworker and love interest, but much like Three to Tango, she doesn’t think romance is on the table because she thinks he’s gay. If you liked that ’90s American comedy, you’ll probably really like the French counterpart, The Closet. I watched in high school during French class, so if you need an excuse to watch it, you can say you’re studying your French.
