The Killers (1946)
The reason The Killers is remembered is it was Burt Lancaster’s first movie. Yes, it’s a film noir murder mystery, but if it didn’t give birth to such a fantastic star, it probably would have been swept under the rug with the other 40s noir films.
On the surface, it sounds like a cheesy story that someone wrote to make fun of old gangster movies. Burt’s nickname is “The Swede” and Ava Gardner plays the slinky love interest Kitty Collins. Hitmen and detectives make up the rest of the characters, and while there are twists and turns and flashbacks, when you watch it now, you’ll chuckle at all the spoofs that have been made in the decades since.
If you’re able to keep a straight face, you’ll be treated to a classic, classic noir. All the directing tips they feed students in film school can be found used by Robert Siodmak. The use of light and dark, the canted angles, patterns of window blinds, and complicated plot are all classic staples of the genre. The music is very memorable, too. Miklos Rosza’s theme was later used in Dragnet, so while you’re busy getting to know the new Hollywood star and the slinky starlet, you can listen to some great music!
