The Lady Eve (1941)
When Barbara Stanwyck made four romantic comedies in 1941, I wonder if she thought it possible that she’d ever get out of that rut. If you like silly screwball comedies, you’ll want to rent The Lady Eve and Ball of Fire. But if you’re like me, skip those two. They’re just too silly and stupid.
This Preston Sturges classic involves a cruise ship, a con artist, and a ridiculous amount of silly “banana peel” gags. Barbara Stanwyck plays the imbecilic con artist who works with her father, Charles Coburn. Their next target: the wealthy and inexperienced Henry Fonda, who, incredibly enough, is even more ridiculous than Barbara is! The only good scene in the film, in my opinion, is after the cruise, when the two lovebirds are horseback riding. They’ve stopped to look at the sunset, and Henry tries to declare his love for Barbara. The horse keeps nudging him, interfering with the scene, and it’s all they can do to keep from laughing in the middle of the take! Ironically, that was the only scene that made me laugh, and the unscripted humor was a total accident.
