The Last of Mrs. Cheyney (1937)
If you liked The Lady Eve, you’ll probably like The Last of Mrs. Cheyney, a similar story of a con woman pretending to be a rich widow. Joan Crawford stars in this one, and while she easily hooks the bumbling Frank Morgan into a romance, she also hooks Robert Montgomery on the same boat cruise. Frank easily swallows her lies, but Bob seems as savvy as he is handsome. Will Joan’s fraud be exposed? William Powell certainly hopes she won’t, since he’s her partner in crime. Add in Nigel Bruce, Jessie Ralph, Benita Hume, and Sara Haden, and you’ve got a cast full of very familiar faces.
All in all, the film was a bit too silly for my taste. I’ll sit through anything for a chance to drool over Robert Montgomery, but I’m not really a Joan Crawford fan. It’s not really my idea of a good time to see every man she comes across fall at her feet. And since I’m not really rooting for her, I’m not really enjoying the movie.
