The Magnificent Matador (1955)
Remember in Blood and Sand, when Anthony Quinn broke away from Tyrone Power’s bullfighting entourage and became a rival matador? Well, fourteen years later, we see him again in The Magnificent Matador. Actually, the two movies have nothing to do with each other, but since Anthony Quinn’s character in the 1955 film is an aging matador with regrets from his past, I thought it would be fun to imagine a connection from earlier.
Believe it or not, I watched The Magnificent Matador, Blood and Sand, and The Brave Bulls all in the same week. I’m bull-fighting-ed out! This one isn’t very good, but if you think Maureen O’Hara and Anthony Quinn are a darling couple, you might want to rent it. They have some pretty steamy scenes together with lots of open mouthed kisses—a no-no in 1955, let alone for an interracial couple! I actually liked Maureen in this movie, since it was the only one of hers I’d seen where she didn’t overact. She’s also a bit of a bad girl, drawn to Tony and inviting him to her house for the weekend after only a brief meeting.
The Magnificent Matador really isn’t very good, despite the smooches and Tony’s tight-fitting matador costume. It’s not the worst old movie you could rent, though, so if you want to see Maureen O’Hara in some beautiful dresses, you can give it a try.
