The Merchant of Venice (2004)
Al Pacino reciting Shakespeare? Believe it or not, he actually pulls it off. And with Jeremy Irons and Joseph Fiennes in the supporting cast, you know you’re in for a well-acted adaptation of The Merchant of Venice.
Be prepared, though, that this is not a watered-down version of the heavy drama. This isn’t a modern take, nor a symbolic story that takes liberties with the language. You’re going to need to speak Shakespeare to really love this movie. I don’t, so while I was able to appreciate the performances, I barely understood what was going on and often tuned out when people talked for longer than a minute. Theater lovers come forward, since it often feels like you’ve gone to a play instead of the movies.
